 One of the joys of eating in Greece is to sit at a table spread with a variety of mezes and side dishes. They are an integral part of Greek cuisine and there are countless regional variations. We have put together here the 11 most popular recipes on our blog. Why 11? Well, it's 1 more than 10!

1.  Tzatziki

 A classic Greek side dish, which can be served with meat and vegetable dishes, as well as accompanying souvlaki or gyros.

2.  Dolmades (Stuffed Grape Leaves)
 Another "classic" Greek dish. Dolmades can be eaten as a meze with ouzo or as a side dish.

3.  Cheese Pie (Tiropita)
 There are many different types of cheese pies in Greece, this one is incredibly easy to prepare and is unbelievably light. Delicious, and - very important - kids love it!

4.  Tirokafteri
 A traditional spicy cheese dish, which can be served as a meze with ouzo or beer, or as a dip. Quick and easy to make.

5.  Eggplant Dip (Melitzanosalata)
 Smooth and tangy. Made with Greek strained yoghurt, this is a side dish which can be served with any meat, fish or vegetable dish.

6.  Prawn Saganaki
 If you like seafood and/or prawns, then you'll love this dish! It can be served as a starter or a side dish and is actually quite filling.

7.  Keftedakia (Small Meatballs)
 The classic Greek meatballs are called Keftedes and Keftedakia are a smaller version of them. Kids love these! And they are easy and quick to prepare!

8.  Spinach Pie (Spanakopita)
 As with cheese pies, there are many types of spinach pie - spanakopita - in Greece. This one is a classical spinach pie and can be eaten as a side dish or is a very tasty and nutritious snack by itself.

9.  Taramosalata
 This is a dish that is traditionally eaten on Clean Monday at the beginning of Lent before Easter. Very well-known worldwide.

10.  Zucchini Fritters (Kolokithopita)
 These tasty fritters are very easy to prepare and can be served as one of several side dishes - they go nicely with Tzatziki - or as a light snack on their own.

11.  Butter Beans Plaki (Gigantes)
 This delicious dish can be eaten at any time, but is especially associated with Clean Monday, when Lent begins before Easter.
